Team Up Thursday : 4th of July

Jen and I picked the theme "4th of July". I had grandiose ideas in my head. I saw visions of my children sitting on the curb in the little town of Highland Falls, NY waving their little flags, dressed in their Red/White/Blue outfits (supplied my MomMom) and those Saddle Shoe of course. I would get down low and shoot with a wide aperture to get nice background bokeh and the sun would glistened off them.

Well, that did not happen. Don't get me wrong we had a great time but never made it to the parade. This was due to "TRAFFIC". Who knew that everyone and their Uncle would be traveling the Palasaides Parkway on 4th of July?

Instead we hung out at Robot Galaxy, made robots and spent the rest of the afternoon with Buzz and Woody in 3D. The best part was we were with family and by the end of the day we had 5 happy tired kids and one AWESOME Uncle Cullen to thank for it.

Jen got to see some nice fireworks and I am completely impressed with her capture. I just know I would not have been able to get that clean of a shot.

I of course went for your traditional 4th of July symbol. The thing I liked about this photo (as opposed to the 50 other flag shots I took) was the DOF, it almost looked fake to me (but since I took it I knew it wasn't).

I hope everyone had a happy, safe and cooler than here (104 today) Holiday weekend!

For more great Dips!

  1. Oh, Cara....I love the angle of the shot. And the bokeh - gorgeous! did you shoot in manual focus to get the bokeh or did you use a texture/overlay? Great job!

  3. Shelly you know I can't do texture overlays. I shoot it "wise open) f/1.8 with my 50mm. That's natural boken (LOL)!

  5. I think your flag photo is perfect in every way. The bokeh is awesome. You are right. It almost doesn't look real.

  6. Fab photos and you are so right about the depth of field in your shot, looks almost smokey. I had a similar thing happen in my photo this week where the background looks digitally produced but isn't - love when that happens :0)
    Wonderful!

  8. Great theme and great photos, team! I love them both - the fireworks are very clear (tricky) and the flag makes me want to put my hand over my heart - makes me feel proud. Great DOF! Kudos!

  9. I am with you and your flag though. I took a similar shot. ;) It's a great combo, her fireworks go great with your American flag.

  11. Your Fourth of July sounds like it was a blast. It rained all weekend here in IOWA. It was a bit anti-climatic. Love your shot of the flag, it's gorgeous.

  12. I love the bokeh too! Excellent shot! Perfect with the fireworks photo too! The flag also has a tilt shift effect to it - very cool!
